Once the car took the off ramp I knew I was home. I bent forward in my seat, looked out the car's window at the dark clouds hanging over the Galveston Bay, thinking of what I had lost in the course of my life: times gone forever, friends who had died or disappeared, feelings I would never know again.
I had reached a stop sign. To my right was a corner store and I desperately wanted a Coke.
